Shopify POS price and hardware in Malaysia
Shopify POS pricing for Malaysia, POS Lite vs POS Pro, which hardware works without Shopify Payments, and a first-year cost table for 1 and 5 outlets.
By WebCEO TeamPublished 7 min read
Key takeaways
- POS Lite comes with every Shopify plan. POS Pro is US$89 a month per location, billed yearly (Shopify Malaysia pricing, checked 18 October 2026).
- Shopify Payments and Shopify's own card readers are not available to Malaysian stores, so card payments run on a separate terminal from your bank or payment provider.
- Receipt printers, barcode scanners and cash drawers from Shopify's supported list work in Malaysia, bought from third-party retailers.
Shopify POS pricing looks simple on Shopify's website. For a Malaysian retailer it has one important twist: the card reader and payment service Shopify sells in other countries are not available here. This guide sets out what you pay, what hardware works and how to budget the first year.
Prices were checked on 18 October 2026 on Shopify's Malaysian pages. Confirm current figures before you buy. If you want the setup done for you, see our Shopify POS service.
How much does Shopify POS cost in Malaysia?
Shopify POS has two tiers. POS Lite is included with every Shopify plan. POS Pro is an add-on at US$89 a month per location, billed yearly.
You always pay for a Shopify plan first. Shopify lists Malaysian prices in US dollars:
| Plan | Monthly billing | Yearly billing (per month) | Inventory locations |
|---|---|---|---|
| Basic | US$25 | US$19 | 10 |
| Grow | US$65 | US$49 | 10 |
| Advanced | US$399 | US$299 | 10 |
POS Pro can be added to any of these plans. Shopify Plus is priced separately. For the full plan picture, see what Shopify really costs a Malaysian business.
POS Lite or POS Pro: which do you need?
POS Lite suits casual in-person selling, such as a pop-up or a single counter run by the owner. POS Pro is built for outlets with staff.
| Area | POS Lite (every plan) | POS Pro (US$89/month per location) |
|---|---|---|
| Staff | Limited staff POS access | Unlimited staff POS access, staff roles and permissions |
| Customers | Simple customer profiles | Rich profiles and customer loyalty insights |
| Returns | At the original purchase location | Returns and exchanges at any location |
| Operations | Not listed | Inventory management, professional retail reports, omnichannel selling |
POS Pro is charged per location, so you choose it outlet by outlet. A warehouse that never sells in person does not need it. A busy mall outlet with shift staff almost always does, because permissions and staff PINs are how you control discounts and refunds. Our guide to running several outlets on Shopify POS covers those design decisions.
Does Shopify's card reader work in Malaysia?
No. Shopify's integrated card readers and POS Go run on Shopify Payments, and Malaysia is not on Shopify's list of Shopify Payments countries. Shopify's POS page says Shopify Payments and integrated hardware are available only in select regions.
Malaysian retailers take cards on a separate terminal. Shopify documents this setup:
- Open an account with a payment processor or acquiring bank and get a terminal from them.
- Create a custom payment type in the Shopify POS app, for example "Card terminal".
- At checkout, the cashier selects that payment type and the card type, then runs the card on the terminal.
- Once the terminal confirms the payment, the cashier taps Mark as paid.
Because the payment happens outside Shopify, Shopify records that the order was paid but not the card transaction details. Two consequences follow. Staff must enter the correct amount on the terminal, and someone must reconcile terminal settlement reports against Shopify sales each day. Plan that end-of-day routine before go-live.
Ask the terminal provider about rental or purchase cost, the rate per transaction, settlement time and which e-wallets and DuitNow QR the terminal accepts. Rates are set by each provider, so compare written quotes.
What hardware works with Shopify POS in Malaysia?
Most of the counter hardware works. Shopify says that if your country has no Shopify hardware store, you can buy supported models from a verified third-party retailer.
| Hardware | What Shopify supports | Notes for Malaysia |
|---|---|---|
| Device | iPad, iPhone or Android device running the Shopify POS app | Buy locally. Check the app's current device requirements first |
| Card terminal | External terminal from your bank or payment provider | Not integrated. Payments marked as paid in POS |
| Receipt printer | Star Micronics models such as TSP143IIIBI2 (Bluetooth), TSP143IIILAN (network), TSP143IIIW (Wi-Fi), TSP143IIIU (USB), mC-Print3 and mPOP. Epson TM-m30II and TM-m30III | Buy the exact model number from Shopify's list |
| Barcode scanner | Socket Mobile 1D and 2D, Zebra DS2208 and DS2278, HP Engage 2D G2, or any HID scanner | The device camera can also scan 1D and 2D barcodes |
| Cash drawer | Supported drawers connect to the receipt printer with the included cable | The drawer opens through the printer, after a sale or from the app |
Wireless scanners can operate up to 100 metres from the iPad or iPhone, according to Shopify. For a small counter, the device camera may be enough to start with.
Buy one set first and test it with your device and the Shopify POS app before ordering for every outlet. Hardware that is not on Shopify's list may work partly or not at all.
What does the first year cost for 1 outlet and 5 outlets?
The table uses the Grow plan on yearly billing with POS Pro at every outlet. Hardware and terminal costs depend on your suppliers, so they are shown as lines to quote rather than figures.
| Cost line | 1 outlet | 5 outlets |
|---|---|---|
| Shopify Grow plan (US$49 × 12) | US$588 | US$588 |
| POS Pro (US$89 × 12 per location) | US$1,068 | US$5,340 |
| Shopify software subtotal | US$1,656 | US$5,928 |
| Device, printer, scanner, cash drawer | 1 set, local quote | 5 sets, local quote |
| Card terminal | Provider quote (rental or purchase) | 5 terminals, provider quote |
| Card and e-wallet processing | Provider rate × in-store sales | Provider rate × in-store sales |
| Mall GTO reporting (if on GTO rent) | Our GTO app, from US$15/month | Check the listing for multi-location pricing |
| Setup, training and integrations | Quote | Quote |
The plan is paid once per store, not per outlet, so the cost per outlet falls as you add locations. POS Pro is the line that scales. If online orders use a payment gateway other than Shopify Payments, Shopify also charges its third-party fee: 2%, 1% or 0.6% depending on plan. Ask Shopify how that fee applies to in-store custom payment types before you finalise the budget.
How do you set up Shopify POS?
Setup takes a day for one counter and a planned rollout for a chain.
- Choose the plan and POS tier per location. Decide which outlets need POS Pro.
- Create locations. Each outlet is a Shopify location with its own stock.
- Load products and barcodes. Barcodes in Shopify must match the labels on the shelf.
- Set up staff. Roles, PINs and permissions for discounts, refunds and price changes.
- Add payment types. Cash, plus a custom type for the card terminal and any QR payments.
- Connect hardware. Pair the printer, link the cash drawer, test the scanner.
- Design the receipt. Outlet details, policies and, if you issue e-invoices, the QR code customers scan to request one.
- Pilot one outlet before rolling out to the rest.
If your outlets are in malls on gross turnover rent, set up mall GTO reporting at the same time so daily sales reach the mall from day one.
Frequently asked questions
Is Shopify POS free in Malaysia?
POS Lite is included in every Shopify plan at no extra cost, so you pay only for the plan. POS Pro costs US$89 a month per location, billed yearly (checked 18 October 2026).
Can I use Shopify POS Go or the Shopify card reader in Malaysia?
No. Both rely on Shopify Payments, which is not available to Malaysian stores. Use a terminal from your bank or payment provider and record the payment in POS as a custom payment type.
Do I need POS Pro at every outlet?
No. POS Pro is charged per location. Outlets with staff usually need it for roles, permissions and cross-location returns. Warehouses and occasional pop-ups often do not.
Where do I buy receipt printers and scanners in Malaysia?
From local or online retailers. Match the exact model number to Shopify's supported hardware list and test one set before buying for every outlet.
