A Shopify developer in Malaysia can cost anything from a few hundred ringgit for a small theme change to tens of thousands for a full build. Our own published store setup packages run from RM 850 to RM 30,000. An in-house web developer costs a monthly salary: Jobstreet lists the Malaysian average for web developers at RM 2,750 to RM 5,250 a month, based on salary ranges in its job ads (checked 18 October 2026).
The right figure for you depends less on who you hire and more on what you need built. This guide sets out both.
What are your options for hiring a Shopify developer?
There are three: a freelancer, an agency or an in-house hire. Each costs money in a different way.
| Option | How you pay | Suits | Main risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| Freelancer | Per hour or per project | Defined, smaller jobs such as theme changes or a simple setup | One person: availability, leave and handover |
| Agency | Fixed project price, retainer or prepaid hours | Builds, migrations, integrations and ongoing support | Paying for more process than a small job needs |
| In-house developer | Monthly salary plus employer costs | Constant, daily change on a large store | Hiring, retention, and one person's skill range |
What does a freelance Shopify developer cost?
Freelancers usually quote by the hour or by the project. Rates vary widely with experience, so compare quotes for the same written scope.
We have not found a public, dated source for Malaysian freelance Shopify rates that we can cite, so we do not give a range here. When comparing freelancers:
- Ask for the estimate in hours, so you can compare like with like.
- Check whether the price includes testing, revisions and launch support.
- Agree how changes after sign-off are charged.
- Make sure the store, theme and apps are registered to your business, not the freelancer's account.
What does a Shopify agency cost?
Agencies publish or quote fixed project prices for builds and hourly or prepaid rates for support. Our published prices are below.
Store setup packages (theme licence paid by you):
| Package | Price | Products | Apps installed |
|---|---|---|---|
| Starter | RM 850 | Up to 10 | 5 |
| Basic | RM 2,850 | Up to 30 | 3 |
| Professional | RM 5,500 | Up to 50 | 5 |
| Business | RM 30,000 | Unlimited (one-time setup) | 10 |
Support after launch:
| Option | Price | Terms |
|---|---|---|
| Hourly | RM 350 per hour | Quoted per job |
| 30 credit hours | RM 7,875 | Valid 365 days, delivery in 3 to 5 working days |
| 50 credit hours | RM 11,375 | Valid 365 days, delivery in 3 to 5 working days |
| 100 credit hours | RM 19,250 | Valid 365 days, delivery in 3 to 5 working days |
Custom design, custom apps and integrations are quoted separately. Full package inclusions are on Shopify development, and support terms are on support and maintenance.
What does an in-house Shopify developer cost?
A salary, plus everything that comes with employing someone. Jobstreet gives an average of RM 2,750 to RM 5,250 a month for web developers in Malaysia. Indeed Malaysia reports an average base salary of RM 4,084 a month from 394 reported salaries (updated 11 October 2026). Neither figure is specific to Shopify.
At RM 4,000 a month, salary alone is RM 48,000 a year. Add employer contributions such as EPF and SOCSO, equipment, software, recruitment and leave cover. Then consider skill range: one developer rarely covers design, Liquid theme code, app development and integrations equally well.
An in-house developer makes sense when there is daily work for them. If your store needs a few changes a month, prepaid support hours usually cost less.
What drives the cost of a Shopify project?
Five things decide most of the price.
- Theme setup or custom design. Setting up a Theme Store theme is the cheapest route. Shopify licenses a Theme Store theme to the store where it was bought, so the licence is a separate cost paid by the store owner. A custom design costs more up front.
- Number of products and how they are structured. Ten products are entered by hand. Thousands need clean data, variants, metafields and an import plan.
- Apps and custom functionality. Each app adds setup time and a monthly fee. Custom logic costs development time. On Shopify, custom apps that use Shopify Functions require the Shopify Plus plan, which affects how some discount and checkout logic can be built.
- Integrations. Connecting Shopify to an ERP, accounting package or warehouse is usually the largest line in an established retailer's budget, and it needs maintenance as Shopify releases new API versions. See custom integrations.
- Migration. Moving from WooCommerce, Magento or another platform means mapping products, customers and orders, and redirecting old URLs to protect search traffic. See replatforming.
Local requirements add scope too. Malaysian stores use third-party payment providers, and outlets may need POS, mall GTO reporting and LHDN e-invoicing set up alongside the online store.
How do you keep a Shopify developer budget under control?
Write the scope down before asking for prices.
- List your products, payment methods, shipping zones and the apps you already pay for.
- Separate must-haves for launch from changes that can follow later.
- Ask every supplier to price the same written brief.
- Budget for support after launch. A store with no one responsible for it decays.
- Count the full running cost, not only the build. Our guide to what Shopify really costs lists every line.

Frequently asked questions
Is it cheaper to hire a freelancer than an agency?
Often for a single, well-defined job. For a full build, migration or integration, compare the total including testing, launch support and what happens when the freelancer is unavailable.
Does the package price include the Shopify subscription?
No. The Shopify plan is paid to Shopify. Shopify's Malaysian pricing page lists Basic, Grow and Advanced at US$19, US$49 and US$299 a month on yearly billing (checked 18 October 2026).
Does the package price include the theme?
No. For our setup packages the theme licence is paid by you and is not included in the package price.
How is support work estimated?
Every job is quoted in hours before work starts. Hourly work is billed at RM 350 per hour, and credit-hour packs are drawn down instead.
Should we hire in-house once the store grows?
When there is enough daily work to keep a developer busy, and you can cover their leave and skill gaps. Many retailers keep an agency for integrations and larger projects alongside an in-house team.
